YOUR UPPER MAIN STREET ALLIANCE WORKING FOR
YOU!
Street-Works Strategic Visioning Plan
The Upper Main Alliance continues to work with Street-Works and City officials in developing a long-term growth plan for the district and the city’s downtown. We are encouraged by Street-Work’s recently completed “strategic analysis” and are taking the next steps to fully understand what needs to happen for Main Street to reach its fullest potential. Over the next several months, we will be reaching out to our members and public to share what we’ve learned and seek comment on future efforts to revitalize the business district.
City-Wide Way Finding Project (Update)
The way finding signage project is in full swing with fabrication nearly complete. Sign post footings are being installed now and signs will be erected in April and May. The City of Hackensack, Hackensack University Medical Center, Bergen County and Fairleigh Dickenson University have partnered with the Upper Main Alliance to fund this very exciting and necessary project. For more about this project, see our recent newsletter
here.
Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc. (Reminder)
Free Healthcare to Qualified Patients (241 Moore Street)
The BVMI is a group of local physicians, other healthcare practitioners and concerned citizens working to establish a free Healthcare Center in Bergen County. Our volunteers are dedicated to helping our neighbors and improving the overall health of the community. BVMI delivers free healthcare services to employed Bergen County residents who meet certain eligibility requirements. Many Upper Main Alliance businesses and their employees may benefit from this program. We encourage all Upper Main members who have employees who do not have health coverage to make their employees aware of this new program. If they qualify they can receive free medical services at the Center. Their facility is located at 241 Moore Street (corner of Main and Salem Streets) and will officially open on November 10, 2009. For more information, visit:

Housing, Health and Human Services Center (River Street)
The Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center now provides a multitude of services under one roof to people who are homeless or precariously housed. Located at 120 S. River St., Hackensack, the center will place people who are homeless into housing and provide comprehensive support services needed to ensure placement is permanent. The Upper Main Alliance was instrumental in moving this facility to its current location, outside the business district. The Alliance is supportive of this initiative and will work closely with the County and the Center in an effort to reduce the effects of homelessness in the downtown.
